Thrifting can sometimes be a little overwhelming for me, especially when I might not know what I’m looking for or everything looks like junk. However, I’ve come up with a few guidelines and go-to items over time that help me find good stuff. One thing that I consistently look for is sturdy items made with quality materials – even if it looks hideous. For example, I know that real wood can easily be manipulated, sanded, painted, etc. so that’s always a good find.
Something that I pick up quite often that fits these requirements and I always find useful are good frames. I don’t worry about what’s in them (almost always some really awful old print) but look for a decent glass, and a shape of the frame that could be repainted or sanded down to look vintage. Quite a while ago I picked up a few different frames from a thrift shop with unique sizes and shapes. I knew I’d be able to use them throughout the house and make some unique, inexpensive artwork.
